Quick Tip: Write when you’re “In the mood”

by J. Money on January 14, 2013

As someone who writes a blog post every single day, Monday-Friday, I can’t tell you how much EASIER this makes my life. When I try to schedule a time to pump them all out, or perhaps do ‘em “after the emails are cleared,” I not only lose my mojo but I risk spending double the amount of time and effort had I just sat down and written whatever was on my mind as it popped up.

Now obviously you can’t always just stop what you’re doing and write at the drop of a hat, but even getting into the habit of pausing for a bit and at least “brain dumping” into a draft email for 30 seconds could be enough to capture the essence of your wonderfully creative idea :)

I literally just did this myself an hour ago, and what normally would have taken me two hours to complete (I’m not a writer at heart), I was done and out within 30. ‘Cuz sometimes when you go to just jot down your thoughts real quick, you end up sitting there knocking it all out because you’re “in the moment” and excited about it! Which means the quality of the content will be MUCH better too – had you waited until your scheduled writing time later…

The same goes with this post you’re reading here right now – 5 minutes in and out while it’s fresh on the brain!

PS: This also goes for other things in life too – doing your chores, reorganizing stuff, painting, etc etc… Always faster and more fun when you’re in the mood!

I find this very true for me too! When I have to get a post out it may takes hours but if I am in the blogging zone many posts could be done in the same time!

YUP! And that’s the time to really pump them out while you’re on a roll like that – I freakin’ love those zones when they come up!

I hear you on this. I hate slogging through something just because I waited too long and lost my excitement for it. With my schedule constraints, it’s tough to do, but I keep my online notebook on my phone and drop in ideas when they come to me so I don’t forget. Then I come back and remember my AWESOME idea, and go from there.

Yeah, that helps! Much harder to do if you work a 9-5 or have other things going too – so you gotta sneak in tricks along the way as you can :)

“Strike when the iron is hot” is the old timey saying for this. Say that in an old prospector voice and it’s really fun.
